Are script-kiddies bored?

Netcraft: Hosting Companies under Attack?
Apparently script kiddies are not directly attacing hosting companies. I wish they would spend their time on something more useful and productive… i.e. ‘hacking’ the system or doing something for the good of mankind.
But I guess they are still good to show us that technology fails from time to time and we should not be relying on it too much.

Padua at the Horizon Party 1991. Picture taken by Morpheus/FHI.
From left to right: Lubber, Anonym, Jadawin, Powpin and Roman. We had our own room, and there’s tons of stories to tell about this party – later.

Power outages still a trend?

28 August, 2003 (23:00) | Live | By: Frank Michlick

Newsday.com – Power Outage Brings London Trains to Halt
Hmmm, so forget my comment about wanting to move back to Europe when we had our power outage here in North America. In any case, the London incident wasn’t half as bad as the one here… Who knows, we might be better off without power in general, j/k.
The scary part is, that most people don’t understand that the lesson we should learn from this is actually about conversation.
And while we are talking about conversation, why not throw a bit of avoidance in… Avoidance of air pollution, garbage etc. I guess we will only learn when it’s too late.
Our politicians here in Canada certainly don’t set the best example… They really know what is causing the smog, for example see Blackout Ernie versus your BBQ.
And yes, there also was another politician (hey isn’t he lucky, I don’t remember his name) who found out that closing the blinds actually keeps the house cool in the Summer. Hey, it took a major blackout and power conserving for him to realize this.

Open Text to buy Gauss

So another across the ocean venture and integration to come…
InfoWorld TechWatch: Open Text buys Gauss
From what I know about the two companies, I’d have to say that I think they are a good fit, however I don’t know any internas about them. And if I did, it would most likely not be wise to talk about it.
In any case, German Canadian business somehow gets me excited, guess why ;-)

Bowie previewing new CD in movie theatres

28 August, 2003 (22:49) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

As the Globe and Mail reports: Bowie previewing new CD in movie theatres.
This is actually a nice and innovative idea. Which is exactly what the music industry is missing. Ok, it might not be as groundbreaking as Apple finally being the first to launch a download service for music with reasonable prices.
I like the idea and it reminds me that I would still like to showcase demos (realtime computer art) in movie theaters. How about a live tranmission from a demo competition.
Hey, thinking about this more, it reminds me of way back when, in 1995 (I think), when I was freelancing for the German multimedia company Pixelpark. The German artist Groenemeyer was actually thinking about transmitting a concert online – between two locations. It was the year when my company Cyberteam did a MBone broadcast of a concert by The Orb. Well, who remember Mbone nowadays anyways ;-) We had like six listerners if I remember correctly.

Considering to resell c64 stuff from Protovision

28 August, 2003 (18:08) | Work/Degap/Scenestuff.com | By: Frank Michlick

I have been talking to Protovision – Creating the Future about reselling their soft- and hardware on Scenestuff.com.
However there’s a few problems… For example, I only have ‘normal’ 1541 and 1541-II drives for my c64, so what if someone wants a game in an FD version… Also the hardware needs to be pre-paid, and I have absolutely no idea how many people would be interested in that.
I wonder if those disk formats can be copied on the PC… As for the hardware, I am considering to offer a pre-paid order system before placing my first order from the guys in German.
I will keep you updated….

postcard.cd

28 August, 2003 (08:18) | Work/Degap/me4dia | By: Frank Michlick

I just realized today that I had been missing something when I looked for ways to help my friends in Berlin @ me4dia to promote their M4-Card (CD&postcard in one) over here…
The .CD toplevel domain of Congo. Luckily enough “postcard.cd” was still available, so it is mine now :) I kinda felt lucky getting this one, considering that a lot of possible domains for this topic are already taken.
I also received a new sample package from the guys in Germany, cool stuff.
In any case, I guess I actually really have enough domains, so let’s hope that this one was worth getting. Talking about domains, I am still trying to finally transfer my .DEs into my Tucows account. Oh what fun.

Finally switched browsers

28 August, 2003 (08:12) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

I am now finally mostly using Mozilla Firebird and I am loving it. I wish I would have switched earlier. I also wish that most sites would make sure that their website ran with this browser. Who knows, maybe I will finally switch away from using Windows as well? ;-)
