Verisign to count US votes

30 September, 2003 (19:59) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

Internet voting, brought to you by the company that hi-jacked the DNS: VeriSign tapped to secure Internet voting | CNET News.com.
Ever so more this makes me feel very confident in the democratic process which leads to the election of the US government. If you make an accidental typo, I am sure they will forward you to the most bidding candidate. What the heck, we all know how elections are held in the US after Al Gore George Bush won the elections.
I think actually that other countries should really send observers and inspectors to the US for the next elections. Just like we do in so-called "third world" countries when they hold elections.
Talking about elections, I am really eager to find out what will happen in the Ontario election this Thursday. Too bad I can’t vote (yet). I personally could not stand if we had to live through another term of our "BBQs cause smog" premier.

Power outage in Italy

29 September, 2003 (15:38) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

CNN.com – Questions as Italy power returns – Sep. 29, 2003.
Maybe I should create a separate category about power outages – after all it still seems to be an ongoing trend. Maybe it’s just a symptom of our over-technologized world. Maybe it’s a warning from the Creator against the Keeper. Maybe I should not read fantasy books like I do these days ;-)
In any case, I guess we will be seeing more of technology related problems, as we use more and more technology. So it will always be an advantage to know and understand technology and it’s risks.

Nice weather – lots of work – inside

28 September, 2003 (16:05) | Live | By: Frank Michlick

While outside it seems fall has arrived with chilly but sunny 12 degrees, we are getting ready to have breakfast and start to clean the house.
If there’s time there’s some clothes-shopping etc. do be done, so let’s see. Also we started a coconut icecream yesterday, so let’s see how that turns out if we put it in the ice machine later.
Well, Kim is just about to get off the phone with my aunt (a difficult task) who’s 89th birthday it is today, so i am going to try to get something ready for breakfast. Eggs anyone?

The Art of Making Rain follow-up & No Transit

27 September, 2003 (04:29) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

It actually turned out to be a nice event – I meet a few people during the initial networking, I am late with my follow-up as always and the part of the presentation that I saw was nice.
I had to cut it kind of short to catch the Go Train home, so Kim didn’t have to come to pick me up too late. Of course I didn’t know that it was one of those days again. The train was 30 minutes late at Union Station and we had to switch trains at Mimico. Of course, once again no one managed to apologize for the problems… That’s No Transit for you, as I like to call Go Transit.

Weekend and more power outages

27 September, 2003 (04:26) | Main Page | By: Frank Michlick

Yep, we had another power outage at our office. Luckily enough only a small area was affected – maybe it was due to the construction going on on King and Dufferin. In any case, it lead to an early start into the weekend.
No big plans for the weekend so far, let’s hope that the weather is not as cold as predicted. Well, at least we’ll have some time to get some work done in the house.

VeriSign to seek advise

23 September, 2003 (15:45) | Work/Domains | By: Frank Michlick

So VeriSign seeks advice on controversial new service. Isn’t this something they should have really done well in advance? In any case, I am pretty sure that we are going to have to wait a while for the newly formed committee to come up with a suggestion. So this might just be a matter of delaying things to at least get some additional incomie from this "feature".

Builder late

22 September, 2003 (22:44) | Live/House | By: Frank Michlick

This morning I was expecting someone from our builder to drop by to review the remaining items from the pre-delivery inspection. He just arrived as we were getting ready to leave, since he was held up at the office. So he’s coming back tomorrow. Maybe I’ll have some time to go through the list again to make sure which items are still open.

The weekend

22 September, 2003 (22:40) | Live | By: Frank Michlick

Did I write anything about my weekend yet? Guess not – we happened to be rather busy, so hence the delay.
On Friday we went to a colleagues’ housewarming in downtown Toronto – what a nice place. I finally meet her husband and her cat, as well as some of her friends and also two ex-colleagues who I hadn’t seen in a while. We did not stay for too long, but it was nice.
Saturday morning our builder, Mattamy, held their flower fest on the parking lot of the Catholic Church nearby. The mixing and mingling with the neighbours didn’t really happen, but we got a bunch of nice flowers for free. Let’s hope they survive, since it’s not really the best time for planting flowers. Since not that many people showed up, we got a few extra flowers. We did the planting on Sunday and we still have some flowers left, which we are going to give to our neighbours.
It was a nice gesture from the builder, but it does not compensate us for the countless problems we have been having with them. There also were some drinks, muffins and balloons for the kids.
On Sunday morning one of our friends flew in from Montreal, I picked him up at the airport. After giving him the tour of our house, we went to the British Car Show in Bronte provincial park. Despite our brief visit it was really nice.
Take note, if they tell you to go to the far parking lot, because there would be nothing available close by, alsways try first. We had quite a walk to the car, which would not have been necessary at all. Not that we minded, but our friend had been walking quite a bit the day before at another car show in the US, so he was kinda tired.
Then we went back home, grabbed some food and did most of the planting. After a quick cleanup we were on our way to the Summit Garden Restaurant in Mississauga, for a surprise birthday party for another friend. It was fun getting to know her parent’s in-law and some other friends and family. The food was great, too and we didn’t have to pay a cent.

Another lawsuit against VeriSign

22 September, 2003 (22:02) | Work/Domains | By: Frank Michlick

Go Daddy Sues VeriSign Over Site Finder Service, Claims Misuse of Registry Position. I wonder if VeriSign cares at all about their image anymore – apparently not.
I also wonder if the revnue from the adclicks will actually offset the business loss from upset customers and law suits…

ICANN lives!

20 September, 2003 (05:07) | Work/Domains | By: Frank Michlick

As an addition to the lawsuit(s?) ICANN issued an Advisory Concerning VeriSign’s Deployment of DNS Wildcard Service calling "upon VeriSign to voluntarily suspend the service until the various reviews now underway are completed"e;. I’d say that for ICANN, this is already a bit step, so let’s see what happens.
