MindCandy DVD I sold out

19 November, 2003 (19:22) | Work/Degap/Scenestuff.com | By: Frank Michlick

I am just about to complete the final sale of the last MindCandyDVD I I had in stock. I still got about five copies of the Assembly 2002 DVD-ROM left.
There is going to be a re-press of MindCandy Volume I in January, so I am considering taking pre-orders for that one, since I’ve gotten some more emails asking for it. Also as the second volume (Amiga demos, more information at http://www.demodvd.org/) is going to be released next year, I could bundle both DVDs.
I would also like to add additional products to the store next year, for example I have been talking to Chris of c64audio.com about featuring his products here.
Plus I am going to change the backend used for scenestuff.com. First I am going to try upgrading to the latest release of SquirrelCart to see how they have improved the system. But if the problems that I have with the version remain, I will most likely consider switch to InterChange .
Also the next year is going to bring more payment gateway integration. I would like to actually use the instant payment notification by PayPal and hopefully also use some other payment gateway that I can’t tell you too much about yet. Let’s see how things come along…
All in all I am noticing that I have quite a few things to do in the next year… but I guess that’s because it’s easy to say “ah, I’ll do it next year” ;-) So many things to do, so little time and so much procastination…

Hope you won’t mind a question. Why did you dislike Squirrelcart and why do you prefer Interchange? I’m trying to decide on a package myself and I was preferring Squirrel. Thanks for any advice.

Hmmm… basically I didn’t see it quite fit for what I was trying to do, which is selling stuff to Canada and other countries. Here’s what I missed:
- integration of the IPN from PayPal
- the license which basically does not allow for changes (I had to do a little fix for some currency thing, for example)
- I would have liked to integrate Canada post postage calculation, but the license does not encourage this either
- Items that were put into a shopping cart used to remain removed from inventory, even if the purchase was abandoned (I believe this is fixed now)
- The design is customizable, but it’s not quite that easy and flexible as I’d like it… My webdesigner was not so happy with it, hence my store is basically still in a standard design.
- There’s only one tax that can be added with the standard tax feature (w/o using rules), and I have to charge two taxes in some cases.
This is everything I can remember from the top of my head at the moment…
However I never upgraded to the latest version, which does have some nice handy features. Also I have not had a chance yet to actually take a real close look at InterChange, but it seems extremely flexible.

Thanks very much for your reply. For those of us in the same country as Squirrel’s developer, it sounds like the main problem applicable to us would be the restrictive license; however, I’ve seen people post to Squirrel’s forums with sites they made by changing code, and the Squirrel people publicly praised them. Maybe that isn’t such a concern. I agree that flexibility with tax, etc., would be nicer — but is there any ecommerce app right now that is truly flexible enough, in any area?
