AOL starts IM bots

18 November, 2005 (20:01) | Work | By: Frank Michlick

After singing into AOL IM, I got the following message from them:

AIM added a new AIM Bots group to your Buddy List.

AOL System Msg: Send IMs to moviefone
and shoppingbuddy for great holiday flicks and gift ideas. (To remove
‘em, just right-click and delete! Learn More)

After trying to chat with the movie bot for a bit I realized that it
was not a human… hehe, no I meant I realized that that it is only
targeting US users. Other than that it’s pretty much a standard bot, I
just found it very interesting that AOL would start using those.

eBay launches free classified site Kijiji

14 November, 2005 (05:40) | Work | By: Frank Michlick

Just after we recently read about Google’s classified site, Google Base (hey, btw base.google.com now points to a login page, however it does not work for me), eBay Canada just sent me a message unveiling their free online classifieds service Kijiji.
According to the “About Us” page “Kijiji is a startup company created within eBay by a small team of
entrepreneurial employees.”
[...] The word « Kijiji » means « village » in Swahili.

Interesting move by eBay – Since I doubt that they created this in the
last couple of weeks, I would imagine that they were already planning
this – as a matter of fact the site has been live for a while already.
It apparently was launched some time back in March of this year
according to this AuctionBytes article. Businessweek says it was launched on February 28th.

The domain name has originally been registered in February of 2000.

The system is currently offered for the following countries: Canada,
Spain, Germany, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, South Africa,
Australia, New Zealand, France, Austria, Switzerland, Poland,
Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, China, Japan and Tawain.

Cache Data in court

InformationWeek > Digital Evidence > Murder Suspect’s Google Searches Spotlighted In Trial > November 11, 2005

A case were the prosecutor seems to have used cached searches on a suspect’s computer.

Prosecutors claim a Mac specialist on trial in connection with the
killing of his wife did a Google search for the words: “neck snap
break” and “hold” before she was killed.

It looks like this was not based on Google logfiles, though.
